Located along beautiful Kentucky Lake in Camden, Tennessee, lies the Tennessee River Freshwater Pearl Museum, Farm, and Tour. This unique attraction is housed at Birdsong Resort and Marina, and it offers visitors a rare glimpse into the world of freshwater pearl cultivation.
History and Cultivation
The pearl farm was founded by John R. Latendresse in 1979 as part of eight pilot farms. By 1984, it became the sole productive location. John and his wife Chessie spent years adapting Japanese techniques to native waters and mussels. Today, the farm is owned by Robert G. Keast, continuing the Latendresse legacy.
Tour Experience
Visitors can tour the farm, museum, and jewelry showroom. The museum showcases the freshwater pearls and the musseling industry through educational exhibits, local contributions, and storyboards on pearl culturing techniques. A brief video presentation complements the experience.
Additional Amenities
Birdsong Resort offers various amenities, including furnished cabins, a swimming pool, a full-service marina, boat rentals, and more. The location is a popular stop for boaters and features a courtesy car for visits to nearby Camden.
